Jane Cooper
I grew up in a family with a passion for plants, horticulture and all things green – avid gardeners, my parents owned a garden centre for many years. A visit to a Hawke’s Bay winery in my late teens proved the catalyst for me to study winemaking at Lincoln University. After a four-year stint as winemaker at Seifried Wines in Nelson, I then headed overseas to gain further experience.
My international winemaking career began in Chile in 1996, followed by vintages in Australia and Italy in 1997. I returned to Nelson each year for vintage and continued to make wine for three small Nelson vineyards, as well as for the Alexia label after 2000.
